Life is not always predictable. Due to some unforeseen accident you may be left disabled or unable to use your limbs as fluidly as one does. Old age and some serious illnesses could also be the cause of such a problem. With that as a background and while circumstances can’t be changed, it becomes necessary to be able to make your life easier by remodeling parts of your home so as not be dependent on others.

While looking at remodeling your home, and especially your bathroom, the ADA, or the ‘Americans with Disabilities Act’ requires that certain changes be done to make the use of the bathroom a little more easier.

Widen the Doorway

To begin, with if one moves around with the aid of a wheelchair, the bathroom in question should be large enough to allow wheelchair accessibility. To make sure that the bathroom allows the change, it has to be large enough to accommodate one. Typically, for a wheelchair to move around conveniently requires forty eight to a possible sixty inches around the bathroom essentials, to be able to move around comfortably. That being the basic requirement the door has to be widened to let the wheelchair pass through. Typically, and as per regulations, the width of the door has to be a minimum thirty six inches.

Appropriate Fixtures

The next most important factor is for the person to be able to operate the fixtures in the bathroom conveniently. The bathroom might be large enough to accommodate a wheelchair but without the convenience of easy handling, it lacks the meaning. On a convenient scale, the counter of the sink should have a height of thirty two inches. Some wheelchair these days comes with an added mechanical feature that helps to raise its level. With that as a positive feature, one could conveniently reach the counter top, if it is higher than the prescribed height. As per the ADA regulations, the toilet bowl needs to be at a similar height and with an oval shape, as that of the wheel chair. This should make getting onto the toilet bowl easier. For convenience one can also look at fixing sturdy bars at either side of the toilet bowl for added support.

Install a Walk-in Shower or Tub

The next essential area of concern and for ADA accessibility is to make the shower and the bathtub set up accordingly. A mechanic device can be installed to help raise the person from the wheel chair onto the shower cubicle or the bath tub. As well as the size of the tub or the cubicle needs to be enlarged for easier access. Like the toilet bowl sturdy bars can be attached for added support. Overall, all the bathroom areas should have easy to use lever handle operations for easy opening and closing. The switches and electrical outlet should be at reachable heights for added advantage.

These changes would help anybody under the purview of ADA to use the bathroom easily and feel independent again.

You may have been feeling that the appearance of your home is behind the times recently. The thoughts may have seemed to overwhelm you because your friends’ homes are completely up to date with the design trends. You simply did not have enough money to take action until recently, when you received your yearly tax return which allows you to take care of things around the house that have been bothering you for a while. You were quick to remodel your kitchen, which now appears just as beautiful as you have seen on the luxury home remodeling programs on television. The next step is to move on to taking care of remodeling your dated bathrooms.

You decided to add tile to the walls of the shower, and install a sleek sliding glass door to complete the beauty of your new shower. The next step is to move on to deciding what style of vanity you would like to have installed to complete the appearance of your updated bathroom.

Types of Bathroom Vanities

Bathroom vanities come in many shapes, designs, and colors, which may make your decision a bit challenging. Are you looking for a minimalist design? Would you enjoy having a beautiful Victorian design to add character to your transformed bathroom? The possibilities are simply endless.

Luxurious
Each year it is becoming increasingly popular to move away from boring square bathroom vanities. Many home owners are beginning to buy luxurious and curvy vanities, which display true qualities of vintage elegance and character. It is always important to keep functionality in mind so you have plenty of drawers and cabinet space to store your toiletries and other necessary objects.

Modern
Perhaps you have a restroom in your home with no bath tub or shower. It may be a great opportunity to buy a simple ceramic vanity with no cabinets or drawers, with a simple sink and enough surface space to place soap. It is also becoming very popular for home owners to choose bathroom vanities which appear ultra modern in design, with a simple shape, a solid color such as black, and glass cabinet doors.

Whatever your choice may be, it is important for you to consider how the room is to be used, and what your storage needs may be. Your bathroom vanity should generally follow the design style of the furniture in your home, and the style of your kitchen cabinets. It is a very careful decision to make, so do not settle in haste! Follow your instinct, and your bathroom will be transformed when the time is right.

Try a theme look or something which would be different than the traditional stars and balls for the tree.

Christmas Lights: Light up your home and the tree with fancy lights. Make up your own combination in terms of timing the light ups, concoct a fine mix of colored and white lighting to give it a magical look. Play around with different sizes or bulbs for a totally festive look.

Christmas Carols: Christmas is incomplete without Christmas carols lilting in the air. Though it sure is the same old songs each year, but you never get bored of them come the festive season. Make sure you have them playing in your house.

Have you thought about expanding your home to accommodate your family’s growing needs? Perhaps you have a family member who has moved in with you and you all need more room? There are a number of reasons that you may be looking into some home addition ideas.

As our family grows we often need more space or spaces that better accommodates our growing family. But in today’s economy more people are choosing to stay in their existing home and investing in their addition ideas instead of buying another house – and for good reasons! A home addition is a great solution to adding that much needed space and an addition adds value to your house.

So let’s talk about some home addition ideas. Perhaps you already have some ideas of your own!

If your family is growing or you have children that are getting older, your home addition ideas might include adding a room to expand for your growing family’s needs. As your children grow into young adults and prepare to leave the family house they sometimes find that it’s a little harder to make a go of it in this economy and many families are choosing to allow their grown children to stay there longer. In some families the adult children have had to return home to make ends meet. And in all of these situations you are likely thinking about some home addition ideas.

Or perhaps your home addition ideas lean more toward adding a new master bedroom suite? A master bedroom suite that is custom designed for you opens up your former master bedroom as more living space. That space might then be opened up to the rest of your house to create a larger family living area. Or perhaps it would make a great media room for your family to enjoy. Then you can retreat to your new master suite with your custom designed bathroom and relax, knowing that your home addition ideas were perfect for you and your family.

For some families there comes a time when a parent needs a place to live that is close enough that we can see to their needs. If this is the case for your family, your home addition ideas might include a separate suite complete with a kitchen and bathroom designed with your parent’s needs in mind.

Your home addition ideas might be centered more around the kitchen in your house. Does your kitchen still suit your family’s needs or is it in need of a more modern update? If so, your home addition ideas might include an update to your current kitchen or perhaps an extension to your house with a whole new, modern kitchen in the plan.

Whatever your home addition ideas are, a home addition adds value to your home and adds value to your family’s quality of life in your home.

I didn’t realize the importance of making my home compatible with the needs of the elderly or those that are confined to the wheelchair. After my mother suffered a major illness, and was confined to the needs of a wheelchair, did it dawn on me, that little things and changes around the house could help them to lead an independent life. They can move around freely without having to be dependent, more so, they look forward to their days feeling and being more independent than ever before. Also, think about the fact that someday you will age too. Sooner or later you might need these facilities as well. So why not take those little steps for your aging parents and make their life a little more happy and easy.

There are some small changes you can do to make your home wheelchair accessible and compatible. They are relatively small changes but can mitigate the challenges for those who are confined to a wheelchair:

Increase doorway openings to an easy width to accommodate a wheelchair

Remove those little bumps or raised platforms in between the doors and the rooms for easy movement

Add ramps to porches and entry doors or floor levels, where the floor is separated by two or three stairs

Mini ramps where accessibility is needed

Place railings around hallways for easy grip

Move unnecessary clutter and furniture away from rooms for easy accessibility and create a clear path for wheelchair movement,

Increase the width of the closet doors

Remove floor coverings like carpets that hinder the easy movement of wheelchairs.

Toilet seats that are relatively higher and can facilitate easy movement from the wheelchair to the commode.

Hand operated showers and knobs.

Convenient light switches or remote operated switches for lights and entertainment units.

Bed raisers to make getting on and off the bed easily.

Comfortable lounge chairs in order to rest when they do not like to be in bed.

Most of these are changes are relatively easy to install and add. They are inexpensive. You may need professional help while building ramps and other elaborate stuff. You do not have to do them in a day, but over a period of time they can be incorporated to provide easier accessibility with a wheelchair.

You may ask yourself, why these are changes necessary. The reality is you may not be present in person to assist them at all times. At the same time it provides them with a freedom of movement and the opportunity to do things by themselves.

Ageing is a reality in life that you cannot ignore. Sooner or later your parents will age and so will you. It is good to incorporate these little changes and make your home ready for it when the time comes, rather than having to grope with it the very last moment.

Living life the way you want to is fun. And this applies to the elderly as well. They like to live life with élan and style, and with freedom. Freedom adds to the much needed happiness and adds on days to their lives.

The cost of placing the elderly in senior care units can prove to be an expensive affair. With that said, you can choose to make your home wheelchair accessible, and this brings down the cost as you incur it once and for all. It is more like an investment, than having to pay a big amount every month to the care facilities.

This certainly provides more mobility to the elderly. In turn, it helps them to feel good and keeps them healthy with all the movement. After all, freedom is the essence of life, and it is the same for the aged and the elderly!

It has become a known fact that our way of life has had a negative impact on the environment, which has become apparent through climate changes, along with many other indicative factors. People all over the world have began making lifestyle changes as an effort to alleviate the impact that our civilization has on the world, while saving money in the process.

As well as minor alterations to your daily habits, there are also some changes you can make to your home to help the green movement. Whether you choose more energy-efficient lightbulbs or install solar panels, the changes made to your home can decrease your environmental footprint.

Here are 5 tips to help you and your family go green:

1. Recyclable Bags
A simple first step to take while going green can be to utilize reusable grocery shopping bags to steer away from using plastic and paper bags. Though this may sound like a change in habit rather than to your home, it can clear up some clutter and decrease the waste in your trash can.

2. Energy-Efficient Lightbulbs
One may replace the high wattage light bulbs in their home with compact fluorescent light bulbs, which initially cost more than regular light bulbs, but save you money over time.

3. Cleaning Products
Many of the cleaning products that we use today have a negative impact on the environment when disposed of in the sink or shower. Also, our hygiene products, such as shampoos and body washes, pollute the water as we use them. Be sure to switch to organic cleaners and hygienic toiletries for the sake of keeping our water cleaner.

4. Doors and Windows
Another way to go green and save money at the same time is to have energy-efficient glass doors and windows installed in your home. This will reduce outside noise, energy use and keep your home warm or cold depending on the time of year.

5. Turn Off Appliances and Lights
Be sure to turn off all electronic devices and appliances when they are not in use to reduce energy consumption.

Many communities have made a conscious effort to provide services to help people recycle whatever they possibly can. Major corporations have been making a point of using recycled cans, boxes, and paper for their products. Be sure to make changes in your lifestyle to aid in the creation of a greener future.
